Background?

Dr. Wong is a family physician with a focus in gender-affirming hormone therapy and transition related surgery assessments for gender diverse people.

They earned their medical degree at the University of British Columbia and completed their Family Medicine training at the University of Calgary.

They also trained at the Sherbourne Health Centre and Rainbow Health Ontario.

SCOPE OF PRACTICE?

Dr. Wong’s practice includes adult patients (18+) who identify as trans, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, transexual, or non-binary, who are planning to start gender-affirming hormone therapy or apply for transition related surgeries

OUTSIDE SCOPE OF PRACTICE?

At this time Dr. Wong is unable to accept referrals for:

  • Children under the age of 18 (please send these referrals to the Transgender Youth Clinic at SickKids Hospital)

  • Primary care

WHERE DO APPOINTMENTS TAKE PLACE?

Due to Ministry of Health requirements, hormone therapy consultations are in person, and follow up visits are typically conducted virtually at regular intervals for 1 year until treatment is optimized.

Surgery planning consultations consist of one appointment in person. Follow ups typically are not needed as the purpose of this consultation is to provide a letter to your surgeon and complete the form required for prior approval from the Ministry of Health.

Current wait time?

Referrals are processed in the order received. We work to advise referring physicians whether or not a referral can be accepted within a couple weeks.

Patients are then added to a waiting list to be contacted by us. Referrals received up to April 3rd, 2024 should have been contacted by us to book their first appointment. Referrals received after that date will not have been contacted by us yet.

Even once contacted, first appointments may happen roughly 4 to 6 months in the future.

Referral process?

Please fax a referral to 416.572.7103. We will process the referral, then contact the patient directly to schedule an in-person appointment.

Referring physicians will be advised by fax once the patient has been scheduled (if applicable).

Please see “What to do while waiting for an appointment?” below to help prevent delays.

Is OHIP required?

At the moment, patients must be covered by OHIP and not other provincial or third-party health plans. Kindly refer non-OHIP covered patients to other physicians for the time being while we work to improve our processes so that we can service all patients.

What to do while waiting for an appointment?

Due to the long waitlist, please screen for the following conditions and manage/refer as appropriate in the meantime to minimize further delays to gender-affirming hormone therapy/transition related surgeries.

For patients wanting to start either estrogen or testosterone:

  • Anemia (with CBC)

  • Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, psychosis (especially important for testosterone use)

  • Migraines: debilitating migraines, high frequency migraines (more than 6 per month), refractory migraines, migraine with aura, retinal migraine (monocular aura), hemiplegic migraine, migraine with brainstem aura

For patients wanting to start estrogen:

  • Personal or family history of thrombotic disorders

For patients wanting to start testosterone:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding/irregular menstrual cycles: in addition to managing/referring as appropriate, order pelvic ultrasound and consider endometrial biopsy

For patients wanting transition related surgeries:

  • Work towards having all medical conditions being well-controlled and/or substance use reduced as much as possible
